Wind-mitigation discounts alone won't hold down Florida premiums
Two studies covered by Insurance Journal found that hardening a home, with roof tie-downs, stronger roof-to-wall connections, and impact-rated windows, sharply reduces hurricane losses and claims. The catch is that the premium discounts insurers give for those upgrades often aren't large enough to convince most owners to pay the upfront cost.
The research also warns premiums could climb steeply over the next decade if losses keep rising. Fortifying your home still pays off two ways in Florida: it lowers your storm risk and it can earn wind-mitigation credits on your policy. Order a wind-mitigation inspection so every qualifying feature you already have is on file with your carrier.
An independent agent can tell you which upgrades earn the biggest credits with your insurer, and re-shop your policy if the discounts don't add up where you live.
