US home insurers turned a profit in 2025, the first since 2019

U.S. homeowners insurers made money on underwriting in 2025 for the first time since 2019, according to an AM Best report covered by Insurance Journal. The line went from a $1.3 billion underwriting loss in 2024 to a $16.5 billion gain. Underwriting profit means premiums covered claims and expenses, before any investment income.

A profitable year gives carriers room to compete, and more competition tends to show up first as steadier renewals and more carriers willing to write new business. It does not mean your premium drops on its own. Rates are filed by each carrier, and Florida and Texas still carry heavy hurricane and hail exposure that drives pricing.

If your renewal went up again this year, the market may be friendlier than it was two years ago. An independent agent can quote your home with several carriers and check whether you are paying for yesterday's market.
