Texas homeowners sue TWIA over Beryl claim estimates
Three Texas homeowners have filed a federal racketeering lawsuit against the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, alleging it fraudulently reduced claim estimates on properties damaged by Hurricane Beryl. Insurance Journal reports the case was filed in U.S. District Court. These are allegations, and TWIA has not been found liable of anything.
You do not need to wait for a verdict to take the practical lesson. On any windstorm or hurricane claim, the adjuster's estimate is a starting number, not a final one. Photograph every room and every elevation before you clean up. Keep receipts for tarps, hotels, and emergency repairs. Ask for the written scope of loss and read the line items, because the gap between two estimates usually sits in what got left off the list, not in the prices. If the number looks low, you can request a re-inspection or bring in your own contractor estimate. Texas coastal policies also carry a separate windstorm deductible, so know yours before a storm, not after.
An independent agent can review your windstorm and flood coverage before peak season and help you push back when a claim estimate does not match the damage.
