State Farm has started paying a one-time cash dividend to qualifying auto policyholders, reported at about $5 billion and the largest in the company's history. Coverage of the payout says it reaches more than 49 million vehicles and runs roughly 4% to 10% of what a customer paid in premium during 2025. You do not apply for it. If your policy qualifies, the money arrives from the carrier.
The bigger story for a Florida or Texas driver is why a carrier can hand money back at all. Auto insurers spent 2023 and 2024 raising rates hard to catch up with repair and medical costs. Those rate increases have now outrun the losses, so the market has softened and some carriers are refunding, cutting rates, or getting aggressive on new business. That only helps you if you shop. A dividend from one company does nothing for your premium if you are insured somewhere else and have not compared rates since the increases hit.
An independent agent can re-shop your auto policy across several carriers and show you whether the softer market has actually reached your rate yet.
