A Florida insurer is building its own reinsurance arm
Mangrove Property Insurance, a St. Petersburg carrier that launched about two years ago, has created its own reinsurance sidecar. The vehicle, Grove Re Ltd., is domiciled in Bermuda as a Class 3A insurer and is built to support Mangrove's underwriting and risk management. Insurance Journal reported the move.
A sidecar is a pool of investor money that takes a share of a carrier's risk alongside it. Reinsurance is the coverage your insurer buys to survive a bad hurricane season, and in Florida it is one of the largest pieces of what you pay. A carrier that lines up its own investor capital has more control over that cost and more room to keep writing homes when the traditional reinsurance market tightens. That is the practical read here: a young Florida carrier is investing in capacity rather than pulling back, which is the opposite of what the state saw in 2021 and 2022. More carriers willing to quote your address is what actually moves a price, but only if you make them compete.
An independent agent can put your current policy next to quotes from several Florida carriers and tell you whether your rate still holds up.
